What The FTA Technical Residency Can Do For You…

Bridging the gap between fashion education and the fashion workplace, the Fashion Technology Academy (FTA) Technical Residency fills in those essential manufacturing gaps that are not often taught at college or university.

Aimed specifically at fashion students and graduates each Technical Residency is tailored to fit the learning needs of the individual. As a Centre of Excellence for Production the first FTA Technical Residency took place in July 2020 with graduates from universities all over the UK. On this five-day residency the graduates got to grips with patterns and how to make them factory ready, developing their garments with Optitex using 3D avatars, an overview on fabrics and what works, demonstrations of how all the industrial machines work and further information on working with a factory.

Lucy Moore, a fashion design graduate from Leeds Arts University, said: “It’s been a really good week, I think we’ve all learnt so many things, from how to use different machines to simple tips and tricks that the seamstresses have learnt on the job for many years that you don’t pick up at uni. I want my own business eventually so this has given me an indication about how much work goes into each garment.”

What the FTA Technical Residency can do for you:

  • Help you understand how to get your designs and patterns factory ready
