The Fashion Technology Academy (FTA) is currently in Week 5 of the “Threads of Elegance: Conserving the Legacy of Beale & Inman Tailors” project. This two-year community initiative features a six-week tailoring and garment construction course with the FTA specifically designed for students with Special Educational Needs (SEN).
Over the past five weeks, Fashion-Enter Ltd / FTA at the Islington campus has provided students with hands-on experience using industrial sewing machines. They are acquiring essential skills such as threading the machines, inserting bobbins, and adjusting tension. Students are also practising a variety of sewing techniques on both flatbed and overlock industrial machines. By the end of Week 6, each student will have produced either an outfit or upcycled a garment or accessory from unwanted clothing, textiles, or deadstock. These creations will be showcased at the London College of Fashion (LCF).
As the students approach the end of the programme, they are busy working on their sketchbooks in preparation for their display at the London College of Fashion in Spring 2026. A diverse range of draping, tailoring, and upcycled garments has been created over the past five weeks, highlighting the tremendous effort and dedication of all the learners. The teachers have been incredibly supportive, encouraging the students to push their limits and working hard to ensure their designs are met.
