We are currently in Week 2 of the ‘Threads of Elegance: Conserving the Legacy of Beale & Inman Tailors’ project. This two-year community initiative features a six-week tailoring and garment construction course specifically designed for students with Special Educational Needs (SEN).

During the six weeks Fashion-Enter Ltd / FTA will provide students with practical experience using industrial sewing machines. They will learn essential skills, including how to thread the machines, insert bobbins, and adjust tension. Students will practice various sewing techniques using both flatbed and overlock industrial machines. By the end of Week 6, each student will upcycle one garment or accessory from unwanted clothing, textiles, or deadstock, which will be displayed at the London College of Fashion (LCF).
For today’s session (26th Sept 25), the SEN students learnt how to draft simple adaptations for various sleeve and collar styles, such as a rever collar and a bell sleeve. With the guidance and visual examples from the Fashion-Enter Ltd London (FEL) tutors, the learners are building a solid foundation in pattern drafting to prepare for their upcoming designs in Week 3.
FEL’s Head of Education, Lan Leeder said: “It was wonderful to see all 11 learners developing new skills and enjoying the course. They are extremely dedicated, focused, and eager to learn. They are such a pleasure to teach. I can’t wait to see their final creations in Week 6.”
More on this unique project next week.
