Pink Threads #4: Bringing Breast Cancer Awareness, Wellbeing and Practical Skills Together

The fourth and final Pink Threads community workshop took place on 30th October, bringing together breast cancer awareness, health education and creative making in a free, welcoming session delivered in collaboration with Breast Cancer Now.

Delivered by the FEL/FTA team in Leicester, the free community session brought together two important areas: understanding breast cancer and the importance of early detection, alongside the therapeutic and practical benefits of learning how to construct a bra.

Participants were introduced to breast cancer awareness, including what to look out for, the importance of knowing their bodies and the role of routine breast screening and mammograms. The session provided an opportunity to engage with important health information in a friendly, informal and accessible setting.

Following the awareness session, participants moved into the practical workshop, where they explored bra construction, body measurements and pattern cutting. Working through the fundamentals of garment construction, they gained an insight into the technical skills involved in creating a bra, while discovering how understanding fit and design can make a real difference to individual comfort and confidence.

One participant shared a particularly moving account of her experience, explaining how a routine mammogram had led to the early detection of her own breast cancer.

She said: “I really enjoyed it. The course talked about what breast cancer is about and what to look for. I myself was affected with breast cancer. I didn’t know, and through a routine mammogram they caught the cancer, so I was fortunate because it was detected very early. So I encourage women to go for these mammograms when they are offered to them.

“The course was practical as well; we made a bra, which for me was really beneficial, because when I got my diagnosis I was finding it difficult to find a bra that was appropriate for post-op, no underwires, front fastening, etc. The course was really beneficial.”

Her testimony captures the importance of the Pink Threads initiative. It demonstrates how breast cancer awareness is not simply about providing information, but about helping people understand the importance of screening and encouraging conversations that could make a difference to their health.

It also highlights an often-overlooked practical challenge experienced by women following breast cancer surgery: finding suitable, comfortable and supportive underwear.

Understanding bra construction, measurements, fastenings and pattern cutting can help participants appreciate how garments can be adapted to individual needs. For someone who has experienced breast cancer treatment, this knowledge can have particular personal relevance.

Pink Threads has demonstrated the value of bringing health education and creative learning together.

The workshops provided a welcoming space in which participants could explore an important health subject while developing practical skills. The combination of discussion, shared experiences and hands-on making helped create an environment where people could engage, ask questions and connect with others.

The FEL/FTA team in Leicester would like to extend its sincere thanks to Breast Cancer Now for supporting the series of Pink Threads community workshops.

The collaboration has been an inspiring opportunity to combine essential health and wellbeing education with practical, hands-on learning, bringing individuals together through shared experiences and creativity.

The fourth and final workshop on 30th October brought the series to a close, but the messages it reinforced remain important: understanding breast health, attending screening when invited, recognising the importance of early detection and creating supportive environments where people feel comfortable sharing their experiences.

At FCFTA, we believe that skills, creativity and community engagement can make a positive contribution to people’s lives. Pink Threads has been a wonderful example of this in practice.
