Having completed both our Level 1 and 2 courses here at the Stitching Academy, Marquel took a chance and applied for a Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship in Textiles and Apparel in collaboration with the Sewing Pathway and DSI Clothing – who work on the costumes for Strictly Come Dancing. Marquel was successful and was thrown into a fast-paced environment where he assisted with making, altering, fitting and embellishing the costumes.
Marquel comments: “I loved working with Strictly, I learnt at a fast pace which motivated me – I love to learn! I could see my skills growing as I worked on more and more advanced garments. I was able to show my passion, which is making clothes, whilst continuing to develop.”
Apprenticeship now completed Marquel has now gone on to set up his own label called ‘Yodea’ and he launched his very first collection at the London Queer Fashion Show last Friday night (21st September). With our very own CEO Jenny Holloway in attendance Marquel’s designs opened the show before a 1000 plus crowd. Held at the V&A Museum of Childhood, the event featured 11 designers and over a 100 models, tripling in size from last year. What an exciting start Marquel and we wish you every success with your new label…watch this space!
