Free Taster Workshop For 16-18 Year-Olds

On Friday 20th February, the Fashion Technology Academy (Islington campus) held a sewing workshop for the 16+ to promote the UAL Level 3 Diploma and Extended Diploma in Creative Practice, starting in September 2026.

The sewing workshop gave the learners a chance to use various industrial machines, learn basic sewing skills, and explore other courses at the FTA, particularly the UAL Level 3 Diploma and Extended Diploma in Creative Practice: Art, Design and Communication, a 2-year course for 16+ students starting in September. The workshop attracted a strong turnout, with prospective learners eager to enrol in the course.

During the session, participants learnt how to use industrial sewing machines, including threading, operating, sewing and also made a simple wallet to take home. They had the opportunity to speak with the teachers about the Level 3, review the portfolios, and ask questions about the course.

Feedback from the session:

“I really enjoyed the workshop, and the teaching was up to very high standards and amazing. I’m really grateful for the opportunity.”

“Instructors are good at answering questions and helping with harder tasks, like threading needles and fixing machines.”

“I enjoyed it. I love coming back to learn more about different stitches and how to fix my clothes.”

“Learned a lot about sewing, how to do certain stitches and how to improve my skills and all, very happy and the teachers.”

“When I was younger, and I’d watched movies about the fashion industry (e.g. The Devil Wears Prada), I thought everyone would be really mean, but when I arrived, everyone was nice, and is so sweet.  Such a pleasant  experience.”
