Designed to make creative education and stitching skills accessible to everyone, the workshops welcomed participants from across the community, including groups such as the YMCA. Every session attracted a high number of participants, highlighting the growing demand for opportunities to learn practical making skills while embracing circular fashion principles.
Throughout the programme, participants transformed luxury deadstock fabrics into functional products including tote bags, cosmetic bags and cushion covers, while gaining confidence using industrial sewing machines and overlockers. Beyond the technical skills, the workshops encouraged creativity, sustainability and community connection, creating an inclusive environment where participants supported and inspired one another.
The final workshop welcomed 15 attendees and provided a fitting conclusion to a project that has made a lasting impact on those who took part.
One participant, Chiaki, shared a heartfelt letter of thanks with the FC Designer Workspace team, reflecting on the personal impact of the programme:
“This workshop gave me much more than sewing skills. It helped me build self-confidence, and I was happy to make new friends. These are experiences that I will always value.”
Across the 12 workshops, participants consistently reported increased confidence, stronger technical abilities and a greater understanding of sustainable fashion practices. Many commented that they now feel equipped to continue sewing independently and apply their new skills to future projects.

The recurring themes throughout the feedback were clear: participants valued the patient and supportive tuition, developed confidence using industrial equipment, improved their sewing techniques and appreciated the welcoming community atmosphere that ReFAB Studio and the FEL team created.
The programme demonstrates how community-led creative education can play an important role in supporting the transition towards circular practices. By combining practical skills training with textile reuse, the workshops have not only diverted valuable fabrics from waste but have also empowered individuals with knowledge and confidence that will continue long after the project has concluded.
