Mohammed is on an inspiring journey of transformation and skill-building as he trains to become a fashion and textiles trainer at HMP Leicester. With no prior experience in the industry, he is currently undertaking his Level 1 Award in Fashion and Textiles (Stitching), laying the foundation for a new and creative career path.

As part of his development, Mohammed is working closely with the Fashion Technology Academy (FTA) Leicester, engaging in hands-on training and tutoring in teddy bear making a key element of the Bearing Gifts initiative. This programme not only equips him with practical sewing and construction skills but also enables him to pass these skills on to others, contributing to a meaningful cycle of learning and rehabilitation.
Although new to the world of stitching and garment construction, Mohammed brings valuable skills from his previous career in IT. His technical background has already proven to be a real asset in grasping the more intricate aspects of the process, including machine operation and following step-by-step tutorials, something the FTA is currently developing to support his and others’ training in teddy bear creation.

Under the guidance of Jo Bean at FTA, Mohammed has quickly gained essential foundational skills. He’s learned how to trace paper patterns onto card for easier and more accurate fabric cutting, understand the significance of grain lines in pattern placement, layer fabric correctly, and importantly distinguish between fabric scissors and paper scissors, a key lesson for any aspiring textile worker.
Mohammed’s training is set to be completed by mid-November, at which point he will be well-positioned to support others within the prison in developing their own skills. His journey reflects the power of education and vocational training in creating new opportunities, fostering confidence, and building a strong foundation for the future.
