LEVEL 1

ABC Awards Level 1 – Certificate in Fashion and Textiles (500/4330/4) - Stitching Academy Multi Disciplines


This is an eight week course. You will practice a variety of sewing techniques to produce a range of stitch disciplines. The stitching techniques will provide the knowledge to review the different types of garment construction techniques used within industry, and also for upholstery and soft-toy making.


You will practice a variety of sewing techniques to produce a range of stitch samples, measuring, cutting and constructing a basic pattern, and learn to identify what is good and poor quality.


What you will study:

You will study 4 units and each unit is 6 credits. Upon successful completion of the eight week course you will gain the SEG (ABC) Level 1 Award in Fashion and Textiles.


Garment Construction, 6 credits

In this unit you will develop skills in the use of industrial sewing machinery. This includes how to identify the best machinery for the required production of your garments/soft furnishings and how to construct different part of a garment using an overlocker, flatbed straight stitch machines, cover stitch and buttonhole/button attach machines. You will demonstrate how to thread them correctly, insert the bobbin, adjust the tension and produce a range of sewing tests and mock garments / soft furnishing.


Soft Furnishing, 6 credits

In this unit you will develop skills in the use of industrial sewing machinery. This includes how to use a lockstitch machine to produce a range of seam and hem samples, join fabric with an overlocker and adjust stitch tension appropriately to achieve a suitable finish. You will work on mood boards and colour charts and how to incorporate the them into making a range of range of soft furnishing for the home.


Introduction to Upholstery, 6 credits

In this unit you will learn about the suitability of upholstery fabric, how best to use them plus what is required to cover a chair frame. You will also learn about the different tools of the trade and how to use each tool safely.


Soft-toy Making, 6 credits

You will learn to use the different machines and tools of this trade and how to use each tool safely and correctly so you can construction a range of soft toys. Each fabric will be assessed so you understand the properties and ensure the fabric is fit for purpose for your range of toys.


How you will be taught

This is a very practical hands on course and is excellent for vocational type learners. You will be inducted into Health and Safety procedures and policies to ensure you work safely with fellow learners and tutors. Your progress will be reviewed at regular intervals to ensure you are getting the most from the course and we encourage constant feedback to ensure that you are learning all you can and more!
