Katherine Carter

Katherine Carter

This week has been absolutely amazing! I have enjoyed every second of it, and I didn’t want it to end I have seen so many mind blowing things being here from designing to the machining. I have experienced so many different things and job options in the fashion world, and everyone was so friendly and nice. I found it easy to talk to people, even though I’m a very shy person. This week has improved my confidence massively. I have experienced the business, designing and social media side of fashion, which has been so helpful, as now I know which root I want to go down now. I know that I defiantly want to work in fashion. I would recommend this experience to anyone who is thinking about going into fashion, as it’s so fun, interesting, exciting and creative. Thank you so much Fashion Capital/Enter for this unforgettable experience, I will treasure it forever.

Katherine Carter's Work Experience Diary

Katherine's second day of work experience at Fashion Enter

Today I went to meet Beth the in-house designer at Fashion Enter. Beth first gave us the task of making a mood board, mine was themed around mesh fabric. I started to collect pictures of mesh dresses, tops and swimsuits, I also collected images of objects and art work that I thought would look groovy on something with mesh fabric. I sourced images such as cactuses, street art, flowers and some other nature or arty related things.

The next thing I did was start to incorporate my mood board images into my designs. I made around 8-10 designs that where based around the mesh fabric. I made a dress that was white mesh with vines coming up from the bottom, and pink flowers on the sleeves and high neck. I also made a swimsuit that was pink mesh all over and looked like a cat, the eyes where swimsuit material (as they covered the chest area) and the two front paws in swimsuit fabric also (as the two paws cover the lady area).

After I finished designing I started to stick my designs on to an A3 piece of card, I also added to the page different fabrics that I could use, different colours and different images. Which included mesh, lace, sateen and cotton. Didn’t have time to include all the designs I made, but I will finish what I started on Thursday.

Katherine's third day

On Wednesday we went to a networking event. It was an interesting experience as I had never been to anything like that before. The four of us sat at a table and told people (who were from local, new business) what we had been doing for the week so far, we also told people what Fashion Capital was all about and what they did. Half way through the day we went to a seminar about public speaking. He told us about his three key points that everyone needs to build up their business; be present, participate and give people there dreams. After that we walked around the venue (Alexandra palace) which was beautiful. As the day came to an end we travelled back to wear the Fashion Capital table was and talked to some more people.

Katherine's forth day

On Thursday we made another mood board, but for a different topic, mine was jungle themed. I made 2 this time as I needed lots of images for the background of my mood board of designs. After this I started to design garments for the jungle theme, in my garments I included things like; leaves, tropic fish, tropical flowers, and exotic animals. These things were included on things like dresses, jumpsuits and trousers. One of my dresses was based on a water fall, it had a water affect going down the front and at the sides, a rocky, grass affect. Another design was based on a jungle explorer. It was a dress with a shirt feature at the top, that was a dull green colour, and then went down into a body tight bottom that was also dull green colour.

After this I realised that my 2 mood boards were too small to fill the hole of an A3 sheet of paper, so I cut the 2 mood boards into strips and laid them across the paper. It looked rather snazzy and edgy. After deciding where I wanted the strips to go I stapled them onto the A3 sheet.

Then I cut out and stuck on my designs that I had made earlier. I stuck them on with blue tack and a stapler, over the top of the strips. The final thing I did was cut of pieces of fabric and clothing accessorises that I thought could feature on my designs.

Katherine's fifth day

Today was my last day at FashionCapital/Fashion Enter.

The first thing I did was arrange clothing in the meeting room in colour order (light to dark), and separated non-formal from formal. I did this so the room would look well presented, it took me and Lydia about ten minutes. We were going to arrange the whole room but then we got assigned a new task for Jenny Holloway, she told us to start on some admin portfolios. We filled in some information on the front of them. This was a very simple task and it only took about five minutes.

Then we started to write a paragraph to send to companies. The paragraph told companies what FC Fabric Studio specialised in, and told them how to contact FC. To advertise FC Fabric Studio. We were trying to get different companies interested in FC Fabric, and to try and see if they wanted to purchase from us. I sent to a range of different companies including; Cheap Monday, Pretty Little Thing, Monki and Forever 21. Lydia sent to other places, like forums and also small clothing companies.
