Training the Trainer – Industrial Cutting Course

On 13th and 14th June Fashion-Enter Ltd (FEL) ran a two-day industrial cutting course for a small group of individuals from HMPS.

The group completed the tailor made course with Factory Manager Chris Toumba and Garment Technologist Elle Argyrou along with input from CEO, Jenny Holloway and Director, Caroline Ash.

The course included up-to-the-minute health and safety information with live, practical demonstrations and the opportunity to demonstrate understanding through observation and participation.

Day 1 comprised of a meet and greet, health and safety presentation, working with different fabrics, exercise using lay plans and factory best practices.

Day 2 the course explained the importance of checking patterns before laying up/consequences of incorrect patterns. Importance of final garments and how to complete specifications (using HMPS garments). How to use Vetigraph – making own markers for exercise.

Use of the hand rotary and straight knife cutter – machine maintenance and changing blade/band. Use of the Rotary cutter, how to cut complicated shapes, laying up fabric, laying up jersey and woven fabrics, in preparation for cutting production. Use of the straight cutter, along with top tips on how to cut correctly & safely.

Day 2 rounded off with an evaluation and summary of the course and participants were welcome to give feedback on all the elements covered.

Garment Technologist / Tutor Elle said: “The HMPS course went really well. Both trainees were enthusiastic and willing to participate in all aspects of the course, asking questions frequently, to further their knowledge and understanding. I was extremely happy with the amount of time they had on the practical side of things, allowing them to finish the course with confidence and enabling them to carry out using the machinery in their own working environment. Chris and myself have also been invited to visit an open day from one of the trainees, to see how they work.

This is what one of the trainees had to say: ‘Just a quick email to thank-you for a great cutting course last week.  I have now used the straight knife.  Please tell Chris I still have my fingers intact.'”
