Old V’s New – Students Learn About the Supply Chain Shift

We’ve had another busy week (commencing 20th November) with visiting groups taking our popular Factory Uncovered seminar and tour.

Led by FEL Director Caroline Ash the groups from Glasgow and Exeter got to experience old and new apparel production methods. From our traditional factory in Unit 13 to the latest cutting edge technology in Unit 4, the students were able to see how technology is being integrated into the sector and is addressing sustainability concerns.

Caroline said: “We had a returning group in this week from what has now been renamed the ‘Kings Trust’ team at Glasgow Clyde College, they are always a joy to present to as they already have so much knowledge and we get some very interesting questions.

“Then came a new client Exeter College, their focus was very much on the supply chain so we concentrated on this subject. We got good feedback which has resulted 2 more seminars being booked for different groups within the college.”

Glasgow students commented:

“I found out about the importance of speed to market and more of the manufacturing process behind the scenes. Also about the future of design and manufacturing through online / 3D systems. Great experience!”

“It was good to be able to see the whole process from start to finish. Very inspiring, thank-you.”

“I feel I got an insightful overall view of the industrial process. Also an introduction into 3D and digital that I did not know anything about. Great day.”

“I greatly enjoyed my visit today. Its given me so much to think about. Loved the 3D and digital printer.”

Exeter students added:

“The seminar gave me all the information I need to complete my assignment. It was very informative and had a good venue.”

“I gained a lot of knowledge on sustainability and transportation, this will help me with my assignment.”

“I have learnt a lot about the supply chain and this business and it has taught me a lot more about how it all works.”
