FCFTA Leicester – Weekly Update 31st May 2022

FAB-L Launch

It was great to be a part of FAB-L family fun launch event on Sunday 29th May at the Highfields Centre. It really was wonderful day out with family and community engagement. FCFTA Leicester were invited to attend as we provide skills to individuals to work in garment manufacturing.

FAB-L is a Fashion Advice Bureau, it supports garment workers by way of giving advice and welfare support. As Leicester is a manufacturing hub it is really good to have organisation locally to support these workers. It was really good to know that this organisation is well supported by brands and unions etc. FCFTA positively promotes FAB-L within the Academy and in factories when we deliver our course on Level 1 Workers’ Rights and Labour Exploitation. We continue to support them on this good cause.  Not forgetting to thank them for the delicious Samosas & Biryani!

Congratulations to Gemma

Gemma has just completed her Level 1 Stitching in record time…5-weeks. Gemma was a fantastic learner, very committed and focused on learning a new skill.

She has now secured a full-time job in the textiles industry and we are delighted for her.

The course was funded by the government through the Community Renewal Fund.

Manager Jackie said: “Gemma has been out of work since the start of the pandemic, it has great to see her commit to learning a new skill, mastering it and then find a new career pathway. Well done Gemma.”

New Learners – Level 1 Stitching

Manish Kumar joined Level 1 Stitching last week, Manish previously had a technician’s job in the adhesive tape manufacturing industry. However due to an accident he was unable to continue to do heavy lifting and standing work. Therefore Manish has come to the Academy to learn new skills so that he can move into the garment industry.

Manish said: “My friend referred me to FCFTA and after coming and enrolling here I feel very happy. It’s a nice environment and it’s given me confidence.”

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee

This week, Her Majesty The Queen will become the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee after 70 years of service.

Divya’s husband, Vijayendra Kamath, has captured Her Majesty beautifully in this commemorative oil painting.

FCFTA Leicester – Welcome Hope for Justice

It was nice to have Susan Bannister and Shaista Jakura visit the FCFTA Leicester. Hope for Justice is a non-profit organisation that exists to bring an end to modern slavery by preventing exploitation, rescuing victims, restoring lives, and reforming society. Hope for Justice is fighting human trafficking and helping victims and survivors all around the world. This work is only possible because of a growing global movement of ordinary people who support this life-changing work in many different ways.

FCFTA manager Jackie said: “Really good to catch up with Hope for Justice. Unfortunately no industry is free from modern slavery and exploitation. Here at the FCFTA we are delivering Workers Rights and Labour exploitation courses in Leicester Factories and at the Academy to increase knowledge and raise awareness.”
