FCFTA Leicester Update: 29th September 2022

FCFTA Apprenticeships at English Martyrs School Careers Fair

Thank-you to English Martyrs Catholic School in Leicester for asking FCFTA Leicester to be part of their “Future Event” careers fair. The event had 54 Exhibitors including; Universities, Colleges, industry sector specialists and apprenticeship providers including Fashion-Enter Ltd / FCFTA.

It was great to talk to students and their parents about the different routes and career pathways available. Often apprenticeships can be overlooked – however they are an excellent way to earn and learn at the same time, to gain invaluable industry experience and set an individual on a successful pathway in a specific field.

Jackie Bertram Deputy CEO said: “It was brilliant to talk to students and their parents about the transferable skills that can be gained through working in fashion and manufacturing. I started my career as an assistant merchandiser in retail and now I am involved in education. A career doesn’t necessarily have to be linear. Apprenticeships can provide a great grounding for a successful career.”

There were some amazing exhibitors including; electric cars, Caterpillar diggers and a space rocket – what a way to capture the students imagination.

Dorcas Dress Project

It was lovely to welcome Maria from Dorcas Dress Project to the FCFTA Academy. The Dorcas Dress Project is a charity that supports people out of situations of poverty by providing skills, training and pastoral care, working with people all around the world.

The Dorcas dresses are garments for all seasons of life, including pregnancy and nursing. FCFTA Leicester is currently working with Maria to see how we can work together to make these dresses at the Academy with the students as a UK Hub.

Maria is keen to support ladies that are unable to get full time employment due to childcare situations and the training hub would allow them to do this. There is also the proposal for a Wednesday lunch time social group – to chat, share cultural insights and improve English.

We will keep you updated on the progress of this exciting project.

And Finally…

FCFTA Leicester’s very own Divya took part in an Indian heritage festival in Lincoln on Saturday 23rd September. After many hours of practice she was part of an Indian dance troupe – and she was fantastic! Well done Divya.
