1 Week Introduction to Garment Making

It’s amazing what can be achieved in just 4-days, Aimee decided to spend her weeks holiday at the FCFTA Leicester to learn the principles of industrial sewing and garment making. Aimee achieved so much in a week and produced her end of course show stopper – a lovely top for when the weather brightens up.

What have you learnt this week?

Aimee: “In a week I have learnt how to cut a pattern, how to use the different sewing machines, hemming, overlocking and how to use the button hole machine which I have not been exposed to before. I have learnt new skills such as sewing a rib neckline into a jersey top and then making a final garment.”

Have you enjoyed being at the Academy?

Aimee: “I did the 4 day course because I work, otherwise I would definitely be doing the 10 week course, the environment is lovely, the tutors are really, really helpful and on hand as well. It’s been nice to mix with people that you would might not meet on a day to day basis and also learn some of their knowledge. The studio is nice and airy, it’s a lovely space to learn.”

Leicester Piloting Multiply for Textile Sector

Throughout March FCFTA Leicester will pilot a numeracy based course with specific focus on the textile sector.

The Multiply programme is the first priority of the Government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) this is to support on the levelling up mission to ensure that by 2030, the number of people successfully completing high quality skills training will have significantly increased in every area of the UK.

The Fashion Technology Academy have created a 6 unit textile focused multiply course that follows the life of a garment and explores the numeracy needed along its journey.

The units are:

  1. Introduction to numeracy
  2. Understanding the garment lifecycle
  3. How to cost and place orders
  4. Printing and production
  5. Fulfillment and delivery
  6. Sales, performance and review

This course will provide you with the fundamentals of numeracy needed to work in a garment factory, a buying or production office and the skills can support you with a career but also with skills that can be incorporated in day-to-day life by increasing the learners confidence with numeracy.

The Department of Education cited: “People who improve their numeracy skills are more likely to be in employment, have higher wages, and better well-being.”

If you would like to be part of this FREE pilot and increase your numeracy skills please contact divya@fashion-enter.com to enrol – limited spaces available.
