Director of Labour Market Enforcement Visit and Meeting
On Tuesday 23rd August FCFTA Leicester was privileged to have a visit from Margaret Beels OBE, the Director of Labour Market Enforcement.
Margaret’s role covers 3 Labour Market Enforcement bodies:
- Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority (GLAA)
- Employment Agency Standards Inspectorate (EAS)
- HMRC National Minimum Wage and National Living Wage team (HMRC NMW).
Margaret wanted to visit Leicester, which has over the last few years had some negative press in relation to unethical practices by some factories. There has, however, been a lot of good work going on by many organisations in Leicester (including FEL /FTA) and this meeting was an opportunity for these ‘on-the-ground’ organisations to meet and chat with Margaret.
FCFTA Leicester have been supporting the rollout of SEG Level 1 Award in Workers’ Rights and Labour Exploitation. The Academy has delivered this year to date, 108 qualifications, and encouraged all learners at the Academy to complete this course.
FEL Deputy CEO Jackie Bertram said: “It was great to hear from fellow organisations in Leicester that are also supporting the garment workers’ and increasing awareness of work place rights. Education and access to support is essential in protecting those that are vulnerable.”
The event was organised by FAB –L (Fashion Workers Advice Bureau). FAB – L provide free advice and support for all fashion, garment and textiles workers. The event was also attended by WEA, Sharma Women’s Centre, Hope for Justice, Wesley Hall Communtiy Centre.
