FCFTA Leicester has supported 66 learners to achieve a Level 1 Award in Workers Rights and Labour Exploitation and this week, Wednesday 8th June, certificates were presented to some of those that have completed this qualification.
These courses have been delivered in local factories to those that work in the garment industry. Thank you to GN Euro and Onyx Fashions for investing in their workforce. The course has also been delivered at the Academy to learners that are taking their first steps into industrial sewing.
This course has been developed to raise awareness of their workers’ rights provided by UK law; gain an understanding of the job application process, and how to spot if a job is genuine or not. Most importantly learners also gain the tools and knowledge to spot the signs of labour exploitations, and how to access support should they, or a colleague have concerns.
The event was attended by representatives from the Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority (GLAA), Elysia McCaffrey, Chief Executive, and Frank Hanson, Head of Prevention and Partnerships; alongside colleagues from Skills and Education Group, Paul Eeles, Chief Executive, and Kaye Jackson, Head of Relationship Management. The event was also attended by Leicester City Council’s Deputy Mayor Cllr Adam Clarke.
Commenting on the event, Jackie said: “This is a powerful course that is vital for all industries but especially ones that have been under the spotlight. Thank-you to the garment factory owners for investing in their workers and to all of the learners. English is often not their first language – however this did not stop their commitment and enthusiasm throughout developing their skills in this crucial area.
“Thank-you also to Cllr Adam Clarke who also attended – the support from Leicester City Council and the Community Renewal Fund has made this course possible and for that we are extremely grateful.”
