Work and Health Green Paper Consultation Event at Marylebone JCP 13.02.2017

Steven Johnson and Sandra Burrows,Employer Engagement Managers invited Fashion Enter to a Work and Health Green Paper Consultation in a move from the government to bring about a shift in society’s attitudesmake progress and achieve long-lasting change to close the disability employment gap and understand how to improve the system to make this possible.
David Burrowes, MP for Enfield Southgate, and Michael Morley (DWP North London District Manager) and James Rogers, Employer Strategy, Work and Health Unit were also present and stressed the importance for everyone to be able to enjoy the independence, security and good health that being in work can bring.
The UK employment rate is the highest since records began, but there are fewer than 5 in 10 disabled people in employment, compared with 8 in 10 non-disabled people, and this has been the case for several years.
David Burrows said: ‘We need to understand why disabled people and people with health conditions might be unable to get a job or keep one, and to recognise the wide range of conditions and circumstances they face.’
The event aimed at hearing views from a range of respondents: both large and small employers, employability professionals, health and care professionals, local leaders and commissioners in health, social care and local authorities, voluntary and community organisations.
Steven Johnson said: ‘Many disabled people and people with long-term health conditions already work and many more want access to the benefits that work can bring.  We are committed to financially supporting those with the most severe or life-limiting disabilities and conditions who are unable to work.’
The right type of work is good for an individual’s physical and mental health. Work can bring other benefits – introduce a sense of purpose, raise self-esteem, and allow people to build relationships.
Attending on behalf of Fashion Enter and the Fashion Technology Academy, Operations Manager Esme commented on the event:

‘I am pleased to see that the government is making efforts in bringing about positive change to our attitudes to disabled people and people with long-term health conditions. As a social enterprise, Fashion Enter has been leading by example and benefited from schemes such as DWP backed Access to Work.’
