SEG Awards Level: 1 Certificate Fashion and Textiles (500/4330/4) – Perfect Patterns with Design

Perfect Patterns is a ten-week course where you will learn the fundamentals of pattern making and drafting. You will be introduced into stitching using industrial machines and shown how to draft blocks and then use the blocks to create your own patterns. There is also an element of creative illustrations too for your patterns and styles.

You will practice taking personal measurements and apply them to your patterns effectively; this will also include instruction on industry standard measurements and blocks. We will teach you using a range of methods and techniques as per industry requirements including the unique Telestia system and gain a basic introduction to other CAD CAM systems such as Gerber, Optitex and Vetigraph. You will also learn the basic principles of design and illustration.

What you will study:

You will study 5 units, each 6 credits which, upon successful completion, will gain you the SEG Level 1 Award in Fashion and Textiles.

Pattern Construction (Industrial), 6 credits (T/501/7929)

You will be taught how to make flat patterns using a range of practical techniques; this will include measuring, basic lay planning and safe practice.

Garment Construction (Industrial), 6 credits (M/501/7928)

You will be taught basic technical knowledge and practical skills in garment construction and using industrial sewing machinery. Classes will include how to use interfacing, insert a zip and use an industrial presser safely.

Health & Safety in the Work Room, 4 credits (H/504/2583)

You will learn the health and safety requirement of a garment work room and factory. You will also be taught how to use the equipment safely and required protective clothing for industry.

Design Principles in Fashion, 6 credits (K/501/7930)

You will learn to understand the importance of colour in design, range research, history of fashion and how this information can be used to influence your design of garments and collections.

Fashion Design: Illustration Techniques, 3 credits (A/505/1046)

How to draw fashion illustration in proportion, learn illustrations movement, how to use different art mediums to give texture and colour, plus fundamental principles of technical drawing for industry.

How you will be taught

This is a very hands-on course, so right from the beginning you will be learning practical processes that are industry recognised. You will be inducted into Health and Safety procedures and policies to ensure you work safely amongst your fellow learners and tutors. Your progress will be reviewed at regular intervals to ensure you are getting the most from the course.
